Basics
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzufurans (PCDF), frequently just called "dioxins", are primarily anthropogenic compounds. They are formed in trace amounts as unwanted and often unavoidable impurities in a variety of industrial and thermal processes. In contrast to other organic chlorine compounds such as PCBs, DDT and PCP they have never been produced on a commercial scale.
In vitro experiments have shown that PCDD / F may also form from chlorophenols and other precursors by enzyme catalysis.
